New York State’s Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has sent a letter to Comcast, containing rules and guidelines for monitoring child pornography, which must be incorporated within five days, failure to which may translate into legal action against the company.
The letter instructs Comcast and other ISPs to take voluntary actions, which are “surgically directed” towards checking child pornography precisely, and not just any other content.
Adding substance to his letter, Cuomo stated that the ISP’s unwillingness to abide by the code of conduct would drag the state behind in fighting this scourge, and would definitely create a bad impact on its millions of subscribers.
Comcast, with 16 other ISPs, have already signed Memorandum of Agreement with the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), and National Associations of Attorney Generals, quoting that they would stop their servers from hosting pornographic sites mentioned in NCMEC’s list; the agreement will become operational within 30 days.
As per the Child Victim Identification Programme from NCMEC, as many as 1,233 child victims are seen in sexually abusive images, till December last year.
